IGNITION ACCESSORIES
When you are setting up your ignition system you need to consider all of those extra parts that we always forget when we're purchasing the main components (distributor, coil, amplifier, plug wire set). Most times you never know you need some extra harness or component until you have your parts in hand and are stumbling through the instructions. Frustration kicks in and you either want to kick yourself in the tail end for missing it, or cuss out the sales rep that forgot or just plain did not know to advise you. Here in the Century Performance Center website we try to point you in the right direction and supply the information you need to make complete product selections.
You should always sit down and thoroughly think through what you will need, and in the least collect as many instruction sheets as you can get to make sure you have not missed anything. We offer more downloadable instruction documents than anyone. But, still you may not realize what is available. That is why we created this section with a compilation of various components that make spark some memory or ideas. Click on the part number or GO button for more product details.
Distributor Accessories
Distributor Harness, part #MAL-29349 - Even though this harness comes with a new Mallory Unilite® or M.B.I. Distributor, if someone cut yours up, you lost it, bought a used distributor off EBAY, or some other unknown occurrence, you may need one. This 3-wire harness plugs right into the nylon connector on your distributor.
Ballast Resistor, part #MAL-700 - The Mallory Breaker Point, Unilite®, and M.B.I. distributors all require some sort of resistor to function properly. You have choices in that you can use the OEM resistance wire on your vehicle (if it has one), the Mallory #MAL-700 Ballast Resistor listed here, an internally resisted coil (but not is using an amplifier like the Hyfire®), or a Hyfire® or other amplifier. Not all or multiple of these, just one. If using an amplifier like the Hyfire® it is this unit that now controls the voltage to the distributor. This is a low voltage signal, thus meeting the requirements of the distributor.
Electronic Conversion Kits for Breaker Point Distributors - If you have a breaker point distributor (single, or dual point) you should consider upgrading to an electronic trigger style. You are not only handicapped by the performance of a breaker point, but also having to continually purchase replacement points and condensers. These kits install in only a few minutes and are the same parts you would get if you purchased a complete Unilite® distributor. More spark output, nothing to adjust, and overall better performance top the list of benefits. Find more info in our special Conversion Kit section.
Circuit Guard, part #MAL-29371 - If you are worried about killing ignition modules, the Mallory Circuit Guard will help prevent module damage, but does not guarantee 100% protection. Consider this component to be inexpensive insurance. This product combines Mallory's Active Power Filter (sort of like a pair of rabbit ear TV top antennas) with the Power Cell, but instead of being wired in parallel it is inline. This is just a simple plug-in component that has shown to work well in troublesome applications, but is not a required part. As we tell everyone ... if your electrical system is in perfect shape there is no need for this type of add-on.
High Energy Cap Conversion Kits, part numbers MAL-29507, MAL-29508, MAL-29509, MAL-29510, MAL-29511, MAL-29512 - These kits convert various socket style stack cap distributors to the spark plug tip style cap design. These kits include a new screw-down style cap w/plug wire retaining girdle, rotor, and mounting hardware. Most of the Mallory distributors are of the socket cap design, but many people prefer the newer style cap design. See the guide below for specific applications. (NOTE: The first two digits of the distributor part number designates the series)
(*) These conversion kits come with separate mounting kits. We prefer this replacement hardware kit.
Distributor Point Cam Grease, part #MAL-26015 - This is recommended for all breaker point distributors for use on the point cam rubbing block. Though new point sets come factory lubricated, it is a good idea over time or when doing adjustments to add a small amount of grease to ensure both smooth operation and long life of your points and point cam.
Bronze (Aluminum/Bronze) Distributor Gears - These gears are required ONLY when you are using a "solid billet" roller camshaft. Tappet style and hydraulic roller camshafts utilize steel or integral cast gears and the standard alloy steel gears work perfectly. But, with a steel billet mechanical roller camshaft and hardfaced billet mechanical flat tappet camshafts (induction hardened, or carbonized steel) you must use the aluminum/bronze gear to prevent expensive engine damage. The downside is that the bronze gears wear quickly and must be periodically checked for wear and replacement. For your racing engine, keep a spare handy. We have a complete listing of applications here.
Fuel Injection/Tach Adapter, part #MAL-29074 - On applications that have an OEM "serial tachometer" you will need an adapter that transfers a pulse signal (trigger signal) from the negative side of the coil over to the positive side of the coil. This style tachometer connects to the positive side of the coil and was found on early Ford Mustangs, a few Chevy Camaros, and other older applications. The OEM tachometer in these vehicles cannot connect to the standard negative side of the coil like a modern electric tach. The Tach Adapter moves this trigger signal across the coil so that these tachometers can function with your new electronic trigger distributor.
Ignition Coil Accessories
Coil Brackets - You can use your factory coil bracket for a Mallory round style coil, but Mallory offers custom brackets in either chrome plated (part #MAL-29221) or dichromate/gold plated (part #MAL-29224). If you happen to break or lose the coil bracket for your Promaster Series ignition coil we have a replacement for you with part #MAL-29227
Coil Selector, part #MAL-29000 - This unit is used on systems (primarily circle track racing) where two complete ignition systems are utilized. If one system fails while the vehicle is on the track it only takes a simple flip of a switch to swap to the secondary system. It is this coil selector that allows you to connect two coil wire leads from the two coils to connect to the distributor cap.
Coil Feedthrough, part #MAL-29001 - If you intend to remotely mount your ignition components (coil, ignition amplifier unit) within the passenger compartment of your vehicle you will need a way to get the coil wire lead to the distributor cap. The Coil Feedthrough simplifies this process while meeting the safety requirements needed when passing anything through the firewall. Plus, it makes servicing the vehicle between rounds/events a breeze.
HEI Remote Coil Adapter, part #MAL-29049, #MAL-29050 - The GM HEI distributors (and even better, the Mallory HEI Distributor) are decent performance upgrades over breaker point ignitions, and serve a variety of racers. One of the issues with the HEI is the coil in cap not usually being as good as a typical performance coil. With these kits you are able to convert your coil in cap HEI to be able to use the better external coil of your choice. For 6-cylinder distributors that use the 2-screw coil cover, use Mallory part #MAL-29049. For 4, 6, or 8-cylinder applications that use the 3-screw coil cover, use Mallory part #MAL-29050.
Hyfire® Ignition Control Accessories
Shock Mount Kit, part #MAL-29069 and #MAL-29070 - If you are mounting your Hyfire® unit in a vehicle that is going to get beat around quite a bit in an off-road or harsh marine environment, you should consider installing a set of rubber vibration mounts. Drag Racing, Circle Track, Off-Road, and Marine applications can benefit from a vibration mount for your ignition unit. There are two styles available. Part #MAL-29069 is a #10 thread size (set 4 w/hardware), and part #MAL-29070 is a 1/4"-20 thread size (set 4 w/hardware).
Wiring Harness Adapters - There are instances where you may need a custom harness to connect up your Hyfire® unit. Mallory makes a few (not enough in our opinion), and we have created a page that lists the available applications here.
Mallory Boost Retard Adapter & MAP Sensor for Hyfire® VI, part #MAL-29785, #MAL-716 or #MAL-717 - If you happen to use the Mallory Hyfire VI (part #MAL-685) on a supercharged or turbocharged engine you will need to add a separate MAP Sensor and harness adapter to take advantage of the unit's boost retard features. For a 2-Bar sensor use #MAL-716, and for a 3-Bar sensor use part #MAL-717.
RPM and Window Switches, part #MAL-636 & MAL-646 - Added controls are available when the ignition unit you currently have does not have enough features you may need. The Mallory 4-Stage RPM Switch (part #MAL-636) allows you to control up to four component activations without chips. The Mallory RPM Window Switch (part #MAL-646) allows you to turn a component on/off between specific RPM ranges. This is great for nitrous applications.
Spark Plug Wire Accessories
Plug Wire Stripper Crimper Pliers - Mallory offers a simple tool, part #MAL-29085, but we must say that the Accel 300+ Professional Crimp Tool, part #ACC-170036 is light years better as a crimp tool.
Plug Wire Numbered Markers - If you change spark plug wires on your vehicle constantly you will want to have the wires labeled for easy reinstallation. Even if you don't remove them much, the numbering looks cool. The Mallory numbered shrink sleeve markers will save you considerable grief and they look good too. Available in three different colors to match your application: Black - part #MAL-28797; Red - part #MAL-28796; Yellow - part #MAL-28793. (black shown)
Pro Shield Insulated Sleeving, part #MAL-836 & #MAL-836A - The pros use it, but should you? Mallory Pro Shield is designed for 7mm and 8mm plug wires as added protection against cross-fire, arcing, and contact protection from sharp edges. Use in conjunction with the Mallory Shrink Sleeving below.
Shrink Sleeving - Mallory Shrink Sleeving strips are used in conjunction with the Mallory Pro Shield Insulated Sleeving above. The shrink sleeving secures the Pro Shielding to the plug wire boot ends, creating a watertight seal. Available in three colors: Black - part #MAL-29065; Red - part #MAL-29066; Yellow - part #MAL-29064. (yellow shown)
Firesleeve Protective Sleeving - For extreme applications where the heat is going to tear up your plug wires or other wiring, no matter how you route them you can use the Mallory Firesleeving. The sleeving is constructed from braided fiberglass tubing and impregnated with flame resistant rubber. Available in either 2.5' (part #MAL-29081) and 5.0' (part #MAL-29082) lengths.
Plug Wire Loom Kits & Separators - If you are in need of top quality, great looking, and duarable spark plug wire looms and separators, please look at what we have to offer you in the Made For You Products section of our website.
