Where We Started:
Century Performance Center, Inc. was founded in November of 1989 in Ventura, California. Yes, right in the middle of many of great performance part manufacturers like ARP, JAZ, Borla, Paxton, Wilwood, AR Inc, SI Valves, Aceomatic, and more. CPC was started for a few reasons, one was that with all the engines we were being requested to build for racers, other businesses, and our friends, it was just getting out of control. We needed the benefits of an actual business name, the better buying power, and tax benefits of a "real" business name and location. Most of these customers were corporate accounts with fleet trucks or local drag racers and street racers. They liked the performance and reliability we gave them as well as the power to WIN! The business name developed from trying to get a logo that looked good as "21st Century Performance", well that idea failed as soon as we started the logo. With only fair graphic skills, generating a logo that we actually liked looking at just did not work. So came the shorter version, "Century Performance Center".
Why Now in Reno, NV?:
A couple ideas were behind the move to Reno ... One is that California believes in strangling businesses, especially automotive, or any business that generates even the use of a simple aerosol spray can that releases something into the atmosphere. The second reason was the continued gang problems and lack of the community to develop youth involvement and opportunity in the area. We lived in a great area, but with having young children and the local politicians trying to turn Ventura County into the retirement capital of the world ... it was obvious that it was time to move.
Reno became a logical choice after visiting family that lives close to the area and really enjoying the community. Backed up against the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Lake Tahoe an hour away, and plenty of kid-related opportunities had us investigate the Reno-Sparks area more thoroughly. Northern Nevada loves businesses, especially those that are NOT casino related. The area reaches out with open arms to business that are non-gaming (casinos), and does not try to suck you dry with exorbitant fees and processes that prevent you from properly running and managing your business. They are one of the most strict when it comes to EPA issues, but not in any way of doing anything that one's own common sense can't understand. The weather and altitude has it's drawbacks ... we get snow during the winter months and our altitude is pushing 5000 feet above sea level. Our local track is at 4000' (which usually corrects to over 6,000'). Tuning Cars up here has presented some interesting learning curves considering our past stomping ground was only a few hundred feet over sea level.
Our Goals:
Our goals are quite simple... We want to be the automotive and marine enthusiasts' FIRST and last stop when they are looking for products, support, advice, or just simple education. With complete product information, technical support before and after sale, and also the ability to support those that purchase their products elsewhere. It's a great compliment (though it did not help pay our bills) when our competitors refer customers to our site to fix the errors that their own sales and support staffs have generated by selling the wrong products or giving incorrect support information. Many of our suppliers refer customers with support issues to our website. Why? Because we care enough not just to sell you the product, but to make sure you understand what you are purchasing, how it fits, what to do with it, and what not to do. Sure, our prices are competitive, and in many cases lower than our competition, but we excel in product and customer support issues!
